Working Hero Iowa was founded to ensure every eligible Iowan gets the cash refund they’ve earned, and to fight for a future where everyone who works – and everyone who wants to but can’t – can afford life’s basic needs.
Ensuring the success of the EITC will lift children out of poverty, deliver millions of dollars to local communities, and provide much needed financial security to hundreds of thousands of people in Iowa.
However, outreach and education are essential for this program to work. You have to claim the credit in order to receive it, and many people who qualify for the credit do not file taxes, or fail to claim the refund because they don't know they are eligible. As a result, more than a hundred million dollars in tax credits go unclaimed by Iowans every year.
Working Hero Iowa was created to spread awareness of the EITC to benefit Iowa’s working families, increase the availability of free tax preparation services locally, and ensure that the credit winds up in the hands of those who worked hard to earn it. At the same time, Working Hero will be working to elevate the cause of ending poverty, with the goal of making it a top issue for the presidential candidates and national media coming through the state in the next year.
Working Hero Iowa will work hand-in-hand with trusted community partners who serve and interact with those most likely to be eligible for the EITC. Campaign activities include distribution of helpful materials, free tax filing events, neighborhood resource centers, extended hours at free tax prep sites, and on-the-ground outreach including door-to-door campaigns. This comprehensive statewide campaign will be organized community-by-community to reach Iowans where they live, work, learn, worship, shop and tweet.
